Don’t miss out on this three-day event that showcases everyone’s favorite reptile!
For the 13th year, the Festival de la Tortuga Marina (the Marine Turtle Festival) will be held in Xcacel, Akumal and Tulum. According to Itzel Trujano, environmental educator for the Mexican Association of Flora, Fauna, and Culture, the festival will be held from October 15 to 17. Activities are to include the releasing of baby turtles, various workshops, a film festival, and even a kite making contest.
The festival begins on October 15 at the Xcacel-Xcacelito Marine Turtle Sanctuary, with a sand sculpture contest and recreational games. The next day in the Tulum cultural center, there will be an art event, games, a carnival, and a variety of booths.
On October 17 there will be a rally at Playa Pescadores in the Tulum National Marine Park. Also on October 17th, there will be a Maya closure ceremony in Akumal.
This is the 13th year for this event is a free family event which began for families of those who care for the turtles and is now open to the general public. The goal is to recognize the work of the people who have dedicated themselves to preserving the endangered sea turtles in the Riviera Maya for the last 30 years.
An attendance of at least 1,500 is expected for the finale alone. The idea is to provide education and spark interest in protecting the turtles and other natural resources to both tourists and locals. The event coincides with the hatching season.
The beaches of the Hotel Iberostar and Palladium have registered the most hatchlings in 2015, especially during the full moon.
